From Drab to Fab: A Notebook with Personality (and a Sense of Humor)

It all started with a plain, no-frills notepad—the kind that does its job but doesn’t exactly spark joy.

You know the type: functional, forgettable, and just a little bit… meh. Naturally, that made it the perfect candidate for a creative glow-up.

I began by choosing a fun digital pattern for the cover—something soft and playful with those cool blue and purple tones. Then came the real personality: a bold, slightly cheeky sentiment that explains exactly why this notebook exists in the first place. Because honestly, if we’re going to write things down, we might as well laugh about it.

To give this notebook some structure (and a bit of dignity), I printed and trimmed the covers, mounting them onto heavy cardboard for durability. Matching inside panels were added for a polished, finished look—because even the inside deserves a little love. The original notepad pages were carefully removed, trimmed down to a neat 5x8 size, and prepped for binding.

Enter the mini cinch machine—small but mighty. After punching the holes, everything came together with a teal binding coil that ties in beautifully with the cover design. It’s one of those little details that makes the whole project feel intentional.

And because I can never leave well enough alone, I finished things off with a handmade dangle charm in shades of purple. A mix of beads, a bit of wire, and just enough sparkle to make it feel special. It’s the kind of embellishment that turns a simple notebook into something you actually want to reach for.

This project is a great reminder that even the most ordinary supplies can become something fun, functional, and full of personality. All it takes is a little creativity—and maybe a sense of humor about why you needed the notebook in the first place.
