Fa-La-La —A Christmas Card Classic
There’s just something magical about little voices singing under a glowing lamppost during the Christmas season— and today’s card captures that charm perfectly.
These adorable kiddos are back again, and if their sweet little faces look familiar… well, they should! They’re the very same duo from my Snow Kids series of cards (I’ll link those below), and — exciting news — a brand-new Snow Kids card is coming in the next post. Consider this your festive sneak peek!
Today’s card features a delightful Penny Black sketch stamp that practically sings all on its own. To create this wintery caroling scene, I started by stamping the image, then masking the kids and lamppost using plain old sticky notes — nothing fancy, just effective. Once the kids were safely tucked under their little paper blankets, I got to work on the night sky, blending rich blues and deep purples to build that frosty, star-dusted background. A few bright yellows around the lamppost added that warm glow that makes winter scenes come alive.
After that, it was time to ink in the snowy ground below — the perfect base for their boots to crunch through. I’ll share some photos of the masking process, because honestly, it always amazes me how a couple torn sticky notes can turn into something so polished.
Stamp the image in the desired position on an A2 card front panel.
.
Stamp the image again onto sheets of full coverage sticky notes or masking paper, and cut out. Place the sticky note image directly over the previously stamped image.
Gently tear some scraps of white to create 2 layers of snow, and attach those at the side of the card front panel with mint tape to create a hinge that will allow you to flip and flop them in order to create 2 levels of snow for the ground coverage. The hinged method allows you to go back and forth to create the right depth of color while ink blending.
When the masks came off (my favorite part!), the kids popped forward beautifully, ready to be colored and brought to life. A little shading on their coats, some rosy cheeks, and suddenly you can almost hear the carols drifting through the winter air.
The images were colored with Copic Markers after removing the masks. A background splatter was added just before removing the masks to keep the splatter landing on the image.
