Lacy Layers & Perfect Peonies – A Dimensional Floral Birthday Card
I really wanted to create a card that felt both floral and delicately lacy — something soft, elegant, and layered with detail.
I began with two digital papers from the Rosebud Collection and combined them in my editing program, layering the lace pattern over the floral print to create a beautiful border along the card front. That subtle lace detail instantly gave the design the romantic feel I was going for.
Next, I selected a greeting from the Birthday Sentiments set. I knew I wanted the sentiment to sit right in the mid-section of the card, anchoring the design without overpowering the florals. This particular one worked perfectly — and I absolutely loved the font. Sometimes you just know when it’s the one.
For the florals, I chose elements from the Perfect Peony Bundle. I arranged them in my digital workspace, shifting and overlapping the blooms until I was happy with the composition. Once everything was in place, I printed two copies.
On the first copy, I colored only the flower blossoms using Copic markers (R22, R21, and R20), then carefully fussy cut them with scissors. On the second copy, I colored just the leaves and stems using YG67, YG65, and YG63. This allowed me to build soft dimension while keeping the coloring clean and controlled.
To add a bit of extra interest, I used a stencil to apply small coordinating ink dots in three subtle areas of the background. It’s a simple touch, but it helps move your eye around the design.
Using foam tape, I adhered the cut-out blossoms into place — and this dimension truly made the flowers pop off the card front. For even more texture, I ink blended a piece of vellum in soft green shades, die-cut additional leaves, and tucked them gently beneath the blossoms.
A touch of sparkle from a glitter brush and a few well-placed gems finished off the florals beautifully before attaching the completed panel to a card base.
You really must give this card a try — it’s even more beautiful in person.
And just a little note: the florals are actually a much prettier pink in real life. Why my camera refused to capture that properly? One of life’s many mysteries, apparently.
