From Paper to Buttercream

Most people know me as The Paper Artist—the creator behind handmade greeting cards, notebooks, journals, and more recently, beaded keychain danglers. Paper crafting has been my creative outlet for many years, and there's nothing I enjoy more than turning a few simple supplies into something meaningful and handmade.

But every now and then, creativity leads me down a slightly different path.

When a special baby shower came along, I found myself trading cardstock and adhesives for cake boards and buttercream. While creating a cake might seem worlds apart from designing a greeting card, I quickly realized the two hobbies have more in common than you might think.

Both begin with a blank canvas and an idea. Both require planning, patience, and attention to detail. Whether I'm carefully layering patterned paper onto a card or piping hundreds of tiny buttercream stars onto a cake, the goal is the same: creating something unique that celebrates a special moment in someone's life.

For this baby shower cake, I chose a sweet baby onesie design in soft shades of dusty blue and white. The gingham pattern was created one small buttercream star at a time, transforming a simple cake into a cozy baby-themed centerpiece. A playful duck image completed the design, adding a touch of whimsy that perfectly suited the celebration.

Of course, I couldn't stop there. If you've been following along, you'll know there was also a handmade card featuring an adorable bunny and the sentiment, "Let the Adventures Begin." It seemed only fitting that the cake and card would tell the same story—welcoming a little one into the world with love, creativity, and a touch of handmade charm.

The truth is, creativity doesn't always fit neatly into one category. Sometimes it appears as paper and ink. Sometimes it arrives in the form of colorful beads and charms. And occasionally, it shows up as buttercream frosting and a piping bag.

No matter the medium, I still approach every project the same way—with a desire to create something personal, memorable, and made from the heart.

So while The Paper Artist may be best known for paper crafts, every once in a while it's fun to take a little creative detour and see where inspiration leads.

Whether I'm creating with cardstock, silicone beads, or cake frosting, the goal is always the same — making something special that brings a smile to someone's face.

Apparently, The Paper Artist occasionally moonlights as a cake decorator too!
